Marina Del Rey offers gorgeous beaches, boating and dining experiences. Marina del Rey is the largest man-made marina in the world, with more restaurants packed into one square mile than any other city (except NY). It's just 10 minutes north of Los Angeles International Airport. This unincorporated "near the beach" community was built for boating--even the small bay across the street with its sandy beach and children's playground rents kayaks. For those visiting Los Angeles, Marina del Rey provides a quick and convenient overnight stay on layover flights. It's ideal for vacations near the beach with major attractions within reach. Most residents live in condominiums, high rise apartments or on boats. Marina Del Rey also has a beach on the West Side, called Marina Beach and Mother's Beach. Marina Beach has no waves, because it is sheltered by a jetty. Moms and dads love the beach here because there is no surf—only climbing gyms, swings and a pirate ship for the kids. Picnic shelters and restaurants are next to the beach, making for a great place to exercise and enjoy fresh air with the children during or after a meal. Many consider this the perfect place to learn to kayak or windsurf. At Mother's Beach AKA Marina Beach, you can rent bicycles, skates and volleyball for the sand court volleyball play. The beach also features restrooms and outdoor showers. Enjoy a romantic dinner overlooking the marina and its million-dollar yachts at Café Del Rey in Marina del Rey. Fisherman's Village. This is a replica of a New England seaport and fishing town. You can rent boats -- both sail and motor, kayaks, wind-surfboards and more. Charter a harbor cruise or reserve your place on one of the public dinner cruises or Sunday Champagne Brunch cruises. Or join one of the exciting fishing adventures with Marina del Rey Sportfishing's open party trips. Both 1/2 day and 3/4 day trips are available with rod rentals, tackle, bait and fishing licenses available. Enjoy waterfront dining, shop for souvenirs, or stroll along the cobblestone paths to enjoy views of the Marina. On the weekends (weather permitting) there are free outdoor concerts in the Lighthouse Plaza area.www.visitmarina.com Playa del Rey offers beautiful beaches just a few miles north of Los Angeles International Airport. The residential community is built along streets that dead-end into a lagoon near the ocean and run on top of towering bluffs that have sand beach and ocean views. There's a bridge for walking and bicycling, which passes over a river channel feeding into the ocean. It provides access to the Venice Beach and Marina del Rey to the north, but cars can't access the bridge, so driving can take 10 to 15 minutes. As lovely as Venice Beach, Playa del Rey seems less expensive to park at and appears to be one of those neighborhood beaches where locals might prefer fewer people knowing about their slightly tucked away treasure. Less visible than Venice Beach which has a pier, concessions, restaurants and skate and bike rentals, The beach offers volleyball games and a park by the lagoon, with picnic tables.
